Meet Jonathan in Finland

I have worked as a Sales Assistant at JYSK for almost four years now while I do my HR studies at University. My manager has been supportive of this, so based on my competencies he’s provided me with related tasks, such as the training of sales personnel and involvement in job interviews and recruitment processes. I also work as a translator for JYSK Finland.

In relation to my studies I’ll soon start an internship in the Human Resources Department at the JYSK Finland Head Office. What I’m trying to say is that if you’re a student, JYSK is the perfect place for an after-school job, as JYSK offers great flexibility but acknowledges and draws on your strengths and competencies, so you can develop within your area of interest.

What is it like to be a Sales Assistant with JYSK?

  • Our overall purpose is to ensure maximum sales and give our customers a professional service and a good shopping experience.
  • Because JYSK is so big and multicultural, there is a bunch of rules and standard approaches to know and lots of things to learn, but as long as you take the bull by the horns, have a good attitude, are eager to learn and are an ambitious salesperson who loves cheering people up, you’ll be just fine!
  • We have the best team spirit in our store. It really gives you the boost that makes your day.
  • When working as Sales Assistant you need to be result-oriented and understand the connection between your personal actions and performance and the performance of the whole team (and, in turn, the whole company).
  • I think we are really good at ensuring our customers a good shopping experience, by always welcoming them in the store and offer a cheery but professional service. It’s vital that we want to live up to the JYSK standards and respect them, as we want to offer a consistent quality of customer experience in all JYSK stores.
  • No two days are alike, which can be challenging, but I love a good challenge, and it’s very rewarding to overcome it and succeed in new situations – for example, when you find a solution that fulfils a customer’s needs, so he or she walks out of here with a good experience.
  • Sales Assistant work is rather independent. Your tasks are planned in advance but as the conditions are always changing, you’re expected to make your own decisions and take responsibility. This is one of the greatest things about working as a Sales Assistant in JYSK compared to other places – you don’t just do what you’re told; you have a say and the chance to influence your work.
  • Work can sometimes get a little physical and dirty, especially in the stockroom, but a bit of variation and dirt on your hands never hurt anyone...

Challenges that you meet in your position?

  • The store is always busy so we have to work fast and be able to manage our time and prioritise the tasks on our own. We must ensure an inspiring store despite the rush. No part can be neglected.
  • We must know something about a huge number of products – and I do mean huge – so we have to keep up to date when new products arrive so we always appear well-informed in front of customers.
  • It’s always a challenge to manage situations with unsatisfied customers, but it is very rewarding when you succeed and give the customer a good experience and a professional image of JYSK.
  • It’s sometimes difficult to create additional sales when a customer enters the store to buy just one single product. It’s a great challenge to try to figure out whether the customer’s needs might include additional products, and it feels great when your efforts pay off.

Describe the work culture in your store

  • We have the most exceptional team work and team spirit in our store, and that’s what makes us go the extra mile. We encourage each other to give 100 % of ourselves at work.
  • I think we have a very supportive work culture, in which everyone tries to be a good colleague – you know, share knowledge and help each other. To maintain this culture we have to be respectful, flexible, open and positive towards each other.
  • We have fun, and still we feel collectively responsible for completing our tasks. It’s like an extended family. JYSK is really good at hiring people that complement each other well in the stores.
  • There’s a great atmosphere in our store, and I really think it contributes to a better shopping experience for our customers. I believe the customers can sense the positive spirit, and I think it has an impact on them as well. As shopping decisions are largely based on feelings, that overall sense of joy is quite an important thing to have in a store.

Why should others choose to work at JYSK?

  • JYSK is a very competitive employer, and it’s cool to work for a strong and financially stable company that just keeps growing.
  • In JYSK we get to be involved in a great variety of tasks that provide us with extensive job experience. If you want it, and you work hard to achieve it, there are almost endless career opportunities in JYSK. Just as the official slogan goes: “Bring dedication – Meet possibilities”. So take your job seriously and focus on developing your skills and competencies, and give yourself the opportunity of moving up the career ladder in JYSK.

Any questions?

Meet Mette…

What is it like to be an Area Responsible in JYSK?

  • It’s great to be responsible and be able to influence things in the store. When you’re responsible for an area, you have a lot of influence on decorations and layout – so you have a say in what the customer will see. It’s a great motivation for me – but in general, JYSK is good at giving people responsibility if they want it.
  • I’m one of those people who likes a rather hectic work day – I don’t want to just sit still and do nothing. There’s always something to do in JYSK – when there are no customers, there are thousands of other things to do.
  • It’s great to feel that you can give our customers the service you wish to give – all JYSK stores are so motivated for welcoming our customers. I really like that.
  • We have internal competitions – I mean, in our store – but we also compete with other stores. It’s always great to get a chance to brag about getting the best results. And it’s just such a good incentive that we are rewarded for our efforts, you know, bonuses and great prizes.
  • It’s cool to be part of a good team in this store, but there’s also great support from the other stores. JYSK has a wonderful company culture – with people helping and supporting each other. So once you’re a JYSKie, you don’t want to leave.

Challenges that you meet in your position?

  • There are many different tasks – and there’s always something to do. Some days may be hectic with lots of customer orders and lots of people in the store, so you have to be on your toes all day.
  • Every day we receive figures showing the sales in our area – and if our index figures are lower than those of other stores in our country, I’m responsible for taking initiatives to boost sales. It could be that we need to change displays, staff must be trained in product knowledge, or we must rearrange the entire area.

Describe the work culture in your store

  • We are a really strong team with a lot of team spirit – and we like to challenge each other on professional issues. If you like working in a team, JYSK is the perfect place for you
  • The atmosphere in the store is always cheerful and energetic
  • We are good at delegating responsibilities in our store. We have a lot of mutual trust, and we give each other positive feedback

Why should others choose to work at JYSK?

  • JYSK is just the greatest place to work – you have everything you need to succeed
  • If you’re a competitive person, JYSK is the best place to be – you always compete with your colleagues and other stores, and it’s just such good fun
  • I have developed a lot personally – you become much more independent, grown-up and responsible. You get the tools to handle the world, basically
  • I can guarantee that if you ever work for JYSK, you will never entirely let go again
  • If you want to and you work for it, your career will go very far very fast

What's next?

  • When I first started with JYSK, I wanted to be a Sales Leader – and be a good one
  • But now my goal is to become a Store Manager – so hopefully, I’ll be a Store Manager somewhere within the next five years
  • One thing I know for sure: I’ll stay with JYSK

Any questions?

If you have any questions about the position, please do not hesitate to contact our HR Department in the UK at hruk@jysk.com.

Meet Kasper…

Initial thoughts about the position?

  • I had no idea how big JYSK was. Honestly, I’m really surprised – it is much bigger and much more organised that I imagined. All my new colleagues are so well-educated, and they’ve all participated in various training programmes – they know so much about our products and how to do things. And I was actually quite shocked when I realised just how many colleagues I have around the world.
  • Well, everything was new to me so it took a bit of time for it all to become second nature … I spent some time when I first started getting to know JYSK and their way of doing things. It took a bit of time, but help is easy to get from all levels of the organisation – so if you have a question, it is easy to get an answer fast.

What is it like to be a Logistics Responsible in JYSK?

  • It’s just great to have so much responsibility in the stockroom.
  • Soon after I started, I attended a course for Logistics Responsibles. We were given some guidelines and process descriptions where you can always find an answer if you’re in doubt or have a question. So even as a new employee it was fairly easy to figure things out.
  • Having such good colleagues is everything to me. There is so much energy in the store, probably because we are such a young team. We care about each other so everything is not just work-work-work. We have a really strong team – but we also feel that we are an important part of the rest of the JYSK organisation.
  • If you have any questions, it is easy to reach out to Logistics Responsibles in other stores. We help each other with stuff – also across stores. We know each other from the training course we attended when we first started in JYSK, so you’re not just on your own.
  • You must be prepared for new major things happening in JYSK – all the time. New products, new campaigns, new seasons and things like that. We’re constantly on the move…!

Challenges that you meet in your position?

  • If I have any stockroom questions, I can always call a Logistics Responsible from another store to discuss things. There’s a lot to learn – and I had so many questions to begin with. Now I’m used to looking at the JYSK Facebook page or find answers to my questions on the JYSK Intranet.
  • There’s really A LOT of work to do, and as a Logistics Responsible you have major responsibilities. That’s why it’s important that you communicate well with the rest of the store team so that they can find their way around the stockroom and handle things when you’re not there.

Describe the work culture in your store

  • We help each other. Always! If things are hectic, everyone helps out – even if you should have been off work 10 minutes ago.
  • The level of energy is high, and spirits are high so there’s always a super atmosphere in the store. Going to work is fun!
  • We are good at supporting each other. If one person has a bad day or does not feel well, someone else will take over and do a little extra.
  • There’s always lots of good jokes and a good mood in our store.

Why should others choose to work at JYSK?

  • There are so many career opportunities in JYSK. If you want to, you can move up the career ladder pretty fast. If you keep at it, do your best and have the will to make a difference, you can go very far in this organisation.
  • The team – no doubt about that. You do not find a better team spirit anywhere else. So many good colleagues to relate to and ask for help.
  • It is a good workplace with really good tools – so you’re not in any sense limited in the way you do your work.
  • In general, JYSK has a really good work environment and takes care of the staff.

What's next?

  • In three years I see myself on another step of my career ladder. Anyway, I’d really like to stay with JYSK. There are so many opportunities – all you have to do is ask for them.

As a Sales Leader you are responsible for sales in your store. You get more and more responsibilities and tasks as you improve and develop in the Sales Leader position. Administrative tasks are few for a Sales Leader (the Store Manager will handle most of the tasks). Instead you will be on the floor, focusing on sales and on guiding, training and developing your staff.

As a Sales Leader you will have the following areas of responsibility:

  • Ensure that we perform and make a healthy profit on our different products.
  • Follow up on the key figures of the sales reports: do we perform well, and are we the salesmen we should be?
  • Be on the floor, coach and follow up on your staff and their efforts in order to facilitate their performance.
  • Plan and schedule staff tasks to ensure that you reach the overall sales goal of the day/week/month.
  • Order goods, plan and prepare for campaigns or new seasons – being always one step ahead on types of discounts or price regulations.
  • Make sure that we keep our customer promise: to always be ready with a great offer.
  • Ensure that the staff keep the store tidy and inviting – a great-looking store ensures great results.

This position is perfect for you if you...

  • are very result-oriented
  • can see the broad picture of tasks to be performed – and delegate them
  • thrive in a dynamic and busy environment
  • are a good and inspiring motivator
  • are a vigorous person with a positive mindset
  • can keep track of many different issues at the same time
  • pay attention to details and work towards having a store that appeals to our customers
  • possess a certain amount of empathy and are able to embrace the many different things shared with you by your staff

Any questions?

If you have any questions about the Sales Leader position, please do not hesitate to contact our HR Department in the UK at hruk@jysk.com.

Meet Tina…

Initial thoughts about the position?

  • I was prepared for a challenge – I mean getting so many responsibilities… I knew I had to draw on all my previous experience.
  • Well, you’re always nervous, I guess, whether you are able to do well in a new job.

What is it like to be a Sales Leader in JYSK?

  • The team spirit is of great importance. We have the best team and the happiest employees. We pull together, we make things happen, we challenge each other, we compete internally – and we have competitions with other stores.
  • If your planning is good, then you will go very far – that’s the key to success. And that you remember to take the time to plan and get hold of one of the Area Responsibles or someone else and involve them in the planning. You have to always be one step ahead so that you’re not behind with things.
  • We make things happen in a great way by competing with each other. Competition just makes it all more fun, and it is just SO great to feel the enthusiasm in the store.
  • The atmosphere is fantastic, and the level of energy is high – we celebrate our successes every day.
  • The most important thing – and that’s what I love the most – is to coach the other employees in products or other things, challenge them at a personal level, and basically be part of their development.
  • Personally, I like being challenged by the Store Manager or the District Manager – it’s a great way to develop.
  • As a Sales Leader you get the help you need. All you have to do is ask. There’s support no matter where you ask in the organisation.
  • Having a successful store is a team effort – you can’t make it on your own.

Challenges that you meet in your position?

  • I was asked to take the helm from Day One. Of course, this may be a bit frightening, but it gives you great experience to have to plunge into things and assume responsibility.
  • It is always a challenge to work with people because you have to meet them where they are. On the other hand, that’s one of the very things that make my job interesting – working with employees, guiding them and helping them develop.
  • Things move fast, and you must be able to handle a lot of things at the same time, and make sure that everything is in sync – and that everyone is with you. There are always new campaigns or a new season coming up so it is important to plan – what’s going to happen, and how are we going to make it happen?
  • You must help employees balance and prioritise tasks, daily routines and customer contacts. Of course, the most important thing is our customers, so the staff must be ready to rock and roll when customers enter the store.

Describe the work environment in your store

  • We have a very open culture with room for everyone.
  • The entire team has a great attitude – things just get done… People work hard, and if there’s a deadline we must meet, we work as a team to get there.
  • I don’t think you find a team spirit like the JYSK one in many other organisations – everyone wants to be here and go the extra mile every day.
  • We trust each other – so if you’re given the responsibility for a store area or a specific task, nobody will be looking over your shoulder. We help each other and discuss things, but you’re allowed to put your own stamp on things.
  • We help each other no matter what – and lend a hand if it is necessary to move on fast.
  • We also have a very relaxed culture. We work hard when we have to, but we also have a lot of fun together.

Why should others choose to work at JYSK?

  • If you give a little, you get SO much back! You’re the one setting the limit. If you want to, you can make your way up the career ladder very fast.
  • JYSK is really good at organising extremely fruitful courses and training, and they have excellent trainers and leaders. The interaction between HR and trainers is top-of-the-line.
  • It takes all of us to finish the jigsaw puzzle. I feel like I’m in the Smurf village – we are all small blue creatures that make the world go around. We have blue DNA.
  • Why should you NOT want to work at JYSK? It’s the greatest company – no doubt. You just have to ask yourself: do I want to work for the best or the second-best company?

Meet Olga in Ukraine

What is it like to be an SM in JYSK?

  • I’ve been working at JYSK for 11 years, and I never have two days that are exactly alike. Each day is different from the last one, full of actions and impressions.
  • A typical workday as a Store Manager consists of working with reports, planning staff time schedules, ordering goods, getting ready for campaigns, training and developing the staff, serving the customers, and following up on the employees and their different tasks.
  • I try hard to be a good mentor and trainer to my employees, by being very thorough and going into detail when I evaluate their performance, so they have the best chance of developing themselves and their skills. I take pride in helping my colleagues and boosting their careers.
  • My job is to lead the team to success by passing on my knowledge, to use and develop the potential of each employee, and to be very smart in delegating the responsibilities to create the most effective workforce.
  • I must be able to make fast decisions in all situations, sometimes even extreme ones, and be ready to take the responsibility for my store and staff.

  • Our team is very motivated to get great results and develop our skills so we can improve our figures.
  • There’s always a great and positive attitude in the store. We respect each other, we trust and help each other, and we value each other. We are not just co-workers but also great friends.

What is it like to be a District Manager in JYSK?

  • No two days are alike. My job is extremely unpredictable.
  • I try to visit all stores within a relatively short timeframe.
  • Every morning I send comments to each store on the performance based on their individual key figures - retail controlling. I give them credit for good figures, and I challenge them on the bad ones. I do that every day.
  • As a District Manager you can measure how you’re doing on a daily basis – you always have your finger on the pulse of your own performance.
  • I’m still a major part of the retail culture of the stores – we work very hard every day to reach the goals that are set for the district.
  • We have an aggressive budget. As a starting point we always aim higher than what’s realistic – but it’s still based on the belief that it IS possible.
  • JYSK is a fabulous company when it comes to management – I try, of course, to live up to this.
  • I try to ensure that my contact with store staff does not always go through the Store Manager. That’s why I approach the Area Responsibles and challenge them on their specific areas of responsibility – I commend them for good work or give constructive criticism if necessary.
  • You acquire so much knowledge of retail issues because you have to work with so many different things in JYSK – from campaigns to staff training and annual reports. I make sure that stores get the resources they need. If, e.g., they need to optimise the store facilities, I book a painter or an electrician to ensure that the store staff has the best possible opportunities to succeed.
  • We don’t just sit back and accept bad results. We have extremely free hands - which means that we can change our approach extremely fast and make some quick decisions.

Challenges that you meet in your position?

  • The biggest challenge, I think, is that my tasks are so varied. Sometimes, things are just fine and dandy, other times it’s just hard work to be a District Manager.
  • It is, of course, also a challenge to have such a huge responsibility. It becomes sort of a way of life so a 9-to-5 job is impossible if you want things to work out.
  • It’s difficult to plan – you never quite know what tomorrow brings.
  • It’s a continuous challenge to work with so many people – you’re not just responsible for the bottom line, but also for the well-being of your staff.

Describe the work culture

  • There is a unique company culture in JYSK – this is particularly evident in the stores. They have the most fantastic work ethics.
  • We’re good at celebrating our successes to ensure that everyone feels part of something good – and harvest the fruits of our joint efforts.
  • Everyday cooperation between stores is great.
  • Each Store Manager has a social events account for use in his or her own store. We have competitions in which the stores can win a prize – money into their social account. This is good – people enjoy it

Why should others choose to work at JYSK?

  • JYSK management is characterised by equality – you listen to everyone regardless of title. That is one of our strongest values: encourage all employees to use their right and duty to speak up. That works really well.
  • We talk a lot about key figures across stores. JYSK is one of the few companies with such an open way of using figures and results. Our Store Managers have access to huge amounts of information, and that enables them to benchmark their stores against other stores and Store Managers.
  • We are a rapidly developing company, and basically you decide your own final career destination. If you want to take it further, JYSK will help you along.
  • I’ve said this before: we have a fantastic company culture in JYSK – you won’t find that anywhere else.

But you learn a lot from it! To know your weaknesses, learn from your mistakes and be able to change your habits or ways of doing things is the only thing that matters when you want to develop.

Describe the work culture in regard to the RMT programme

Meet Johan...

What are your overall areas of responsibility?

  • As a Country Manager, I’m overall responsible for JYSK development and operations in my country (Sweden) based on JYSK Values and JYSK Leadership. I refer to the Executive Vice President of Retail.
  • Responsible for creating a productive relationship and cooperation with the following colleagues:
    • Head of Retail
    • Retail Managers
    • Finance Manager
    • Human Resource Manager
    • Logistics Manager
    • Development Manager
    • Sales and Marketing Manager
    • Regional Head of Sales
  • Responsible for the establishment of new stores and for developing the stores and their operations

  • Ensure that everybody in the organisation knows and lives by JYSK Values and JYSK Leadership.

What is it like to be a CM with JYSK?

  • I don’t think there is such a thing as a typical day as a CM. There are so many different things going on all year and all day, but at the same time that’s also what makes it so challenging and inspiring.
  • One day I’m in a meeting discussing the strategy for the next three years or assortment tactics, and the next day I visit stores with other team members, or we discuss how to plan and execute next year’s campaign activities across the different media channels, such as papers, TV and social media. Or I visit and evaluate new store locations. Or stay at the office to interact with HO staff and follow up on projects, initiatives, results and key figures.
  • That’s what makes it so interesting and challenging at the same time – no two days are alike.

Challenges that you meet in your position?

  • The challenge is to find the balance between my urge to develop fast and make sure that we’re all on the right track. With so many stores spread across the country and with many different functions it’s absolutely crucial that everyone knows the expectations and feel confident in what to do and how to do it. There can and should be many different opinions and ways of doing things, but one of the big success factors for JYSK is to do things the same way. Time and again, this has proven to be the most efficient way of working in this kind of a big company.

Describe the work culture in your country

  • I like to see that we work in an atmosphere that is open, uncomplicated and free from unnecessary hierarchy. Everybody should feel that they can always express their thoughts and opinions.
  • I certainly believe that the best organisation has involvement and clear ownership of own responsibility areas. We are in business to be the best, and the best way of making that happen is to develop the team and team members.
  • Finally I would say it’s a very competitive atmosphere with an extreme energy, enthusiasm and drive to succeed, but at the same time we always remember to have fun and celebrate the great things going on all the time.

Why should others choose to work at JYSK?

  • I’ve worked in JYSK for 17 years in almost every position within the retail organisation, and I still find it so inspiring and motivating. The main reason for me is that JYSK never stops wanting to develop, and you get such a fantastic opportunity to develop yourself and take on new challenges.
  • I also appreciate the very strong winning culture which says that anything is possible. In the history of JYSK, it has been proven so many times that if you set a goal and is fully determined to reach it, then there is a really great chance that you will reach it. I really like that spirit!
